SUMMARY:9th International Symposium on Non-CO2 Greenhouse Gases (NCGG9)\, Amsterdam
DESCRIPTION:Ninth International Symposium on Non-CO2 Greenhouse Gases\nIdentify game changers and verify impact\nJune 21-23\, 2023\, Amsterdam\, The Netherlands \nNon-CO2 greenhouse gases include many substances\, such as methane (CH4)\, nitrous oxide (N2O)\, fluorocarbons (CFCs\, HFCs\, SF6\, etc)\, black carbon\, aerosols\, and tropospheric ozone (O3). These contribute significantly to climate forcing. Reducing non-CO2 greenhouse gas emissions is often more cost-effective than reducing CO2 emissions. \nThe importance of this conference is increasing every new event as our window for action in the climate dossier is closing rapidly. Fortunately public awareness that we need to act now is growing. With that awareness “game changers“ are proposed that need scientific evaluation to distinguish realistic and valuable concepts from what is known in The Netherlands as “ride a bike in the sky” ideas. \nThe scope of NCGG9 will be to identify game changers and evaluate impact. The status of global affairs in terms of the non-CO2 GHG issues is evaluated with: \nobservation of the current state and trend in the atmosphere\, on multiple spatial scales;\nusing that information in models to integrate and upscale the available measurement data;\nrunning models for scenario analyses predictions;\nfeeding the results from measurements and models to inventories;\nuse inventories and models to inform and predict;\ndiscuss potential adaptation and mitigation options and policies;\nmake scenarios with social economic parameters and integrated environmental assessment;\ndiscuss the general picture and results with stakeholders\, to identify potential game changers with decision makers\, industry\, the financial & insurance sector\, NGOs and international organizations. \nWe will invite contributions with respect to four themes\, covering causes\, effects and solutions of the environmental problems associated with non-CO2 greenhouse gases. These contributions may report on science (from natural\, social\, technological or integrated sciences) and policy. \nFind more information on the conference page: https://www.ncgg.info/home

SUMMARY:Speaking Up: How Bystanders Can Change the Conversation about Social Bias
DESCRIPTION:Ever wondered “Why didn’t I say something?” after witnessing social bias—a stereotype\, a prejudice or discrimination—that happened in your everyday life? Deciding whether and how to respond to bias is complicated. Understanding what motivates us to speak up\, the challenges we face when doing so\, and strategies for effective responding can help bystanders to bias better evaluate their options and select effective strategies. In this dynamic workshop\, attendees will first learn about bystander reactions to social biases and how these reactions can help or hinder decisions to speak up. Building on this understanding\, participants will learn key strategies for speaking up that invite reflection and dialogue.\nAttendees will then be invited to apply these concepts to everyday incidents of bias though facilitated interaction and discussion. \nSIGN UP HERE! \nFacilitators:\nIncluxion Works\, Inc.— founded by Stephanie A. Goodwin\, Ph.D.–brings diversity science to bear on DEI strategy. Incluxion Works partners with organizations around the country to effect evidence-based institutional change. An elected Fellow of the Society of Experimental Social Psychology\, Dr. Goodwin has 20+ years of experience in higher education as a scientist\, educator\, and academic leader with expertise in diversity and inclusion science\, faculty development\, and academic affairs. Her “Speaking Up” workshops have promoted dialogue to improve organizational culture and reduce identity harassment at 30+\nuniversities and professional societies across the US. \nPowerPlay Interactive Development — an entrepreneurial program of the University of New Hampshire\, is a professional applied theatre company. We create unique training models for a diverse group of clients across the country. Our dynamic interactive model utilizes applied theatre techniques to safely engage participants in challenging conversations around bias\, harassment\, communication\, collaboration\, and leadership. PowerPlay has engaged in an extensive collaboration with Dr. Goodwin in the development and execution of this program. \nDavid Kaye — has served on the faculty of the University of New Hampshire Department of Theatre and Dance since 1996\, serving as chair for 6 years. SUMMARY:FLUXNET ECN Webinar: Featured Research in Latin America
DESCRIPTION:In this webinar\, we will hear from Gabriela Posse from Instituto Nacional de Tecnología Agropecuaria (INTA/Argentina)\, and Hinsby Cadillo-Quiroz from Arizona State University on flux research in Latin America. \nRegister for this webinar: https://lbnl.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJUodOmsrD4tGdWMMAHdol3-oUuPGc3GoKH0 \nAbout the speakers *** \nGabriela Posse has a Degree in Biological Sciences and a Ph.D. from the University of Buenos Aires\, with an orientation in Ecology. She has been working at the Instituto Nacional de Tecnología Agropecuaria (INTA) since 2001 as a Researcher in the Remote Sensing area of the Climate and Water Institute. Her areas of interest are related to the impact of agricultural activities on the environment\, meteorological conditions on vegetation dynamics\, carbon balances in the soil\, fragmentation of environments\, and effects of global change. She coordinated several projects to monitor greenhouse gas emissions resulting from agricultural activities. \nTitle: CO2 fluxes in agroecosystems of Argentina \nIn Argentina\, agricultural production is very relevant\, since agriculture contributes around 60% of the total exports. In addition\, INTA is a public institution whose objectives include conducting and centralizing research on agricultural technology and rural development. With the aim of characterizing the functioning of our main agroecosystems\, we use the Eddy Covariance technique among other methods. In this way we want to determine if they function as a carbon source or sink. We also work on understanding how these dynamics are affected by the meteorological conditions and the anthropic management in these systems. We initially compared these dynamics in a natural dry forest\, in a commercial afforestation and in agriculture paddocks. We are currently focused on comparing the dynamics on two very close sites: one in an agricultural site (where we started the measurements in 2012) vs. other on a pasture with cattle grazing (since 2018). Although the agricultural site seems to behave as a carbon source (taking into account the carbon exported on harvest)\, a model generated for the region using satellite data and grain yield information shows that\, on average\, the agricultural sites have a net balance of in favor of carbon accumulation in the soil. \nHinsby Cadillo–Quiroz is a microbial ecologist and enthusiast of understanding GHG fluxes in various ecosystems. He has a PhD in Microbiology with a minor in Ecology from Cornell University. He and his research team investigate whether microbe-mediated organismal and environmental interactions drive ecosystem processes\, particularly carbon cycling. His team is also examining how the environment\, in turn\, affects the evolution of microorganisms. With significant focus on methane-producing Archaea\, Hinsby has studied northern peatlands\, deserts and desert crusts\, marine aggregates\, anoxic bioreactors\, landfills\, natural and artificial wetlands\, lakes and ponds\, and over the last few years Amazon peatlands. His current work in the Amazon includes collaborative efforts to understand forest dynamics at plot scale\, hydrology and effects on geochemistry\, microbial distribution and community dynamics\, metagenomics\, as well intensive monitoring of GHG fluxes from soils and vegetation. \nTitle: Methane fluxes in Amazon peatlands: addressing their many unknowns through collaborations \nPeatlands in the Amazon were unknown to the scientific world a short time ago\, they were rare anecdotal accounts that\, however\, overlapped with regions estimated with highest methane emission in the world. The discovery of large swaths of land (over 175\,000 km2) holding diverse peatlands in the Amazon\, have shown that peatlands develop under various geomorphic\, vegetation\, geochemistry and soil conditions. Little is known about the magnitude and dynamics of greenhouse gasses (GHG)\, particularly methane\, and even less about their controls. In this presentation\, I will focus on results from different projects assessing the connections of microbial processes\, geochemistry\, carbon stocks and methane fluxes in Amazon peatlands. These results are the fruit of collaborative efforts involving geochemistry\, microbial\, and forestry evaluations in connection with field explorations and multi-institutional support. Results show that methane emissions are highly variable across sites in a manner related to site geochemistry as a predictor of “order of magnitude” emissions and microbial make up. Hydrology is the stronger predictor of seasonal variation. The role of primary productivity\, however\, is more complex than expected for soil flux. The role of stems as conduct for methane emission is significantly high showing one of the highest changes in values of stem emission detected on wetlands from low rain to flood seasons in forested peatlands. Further collaborative monitoring is badly needed in the region. \n*** \nMore information: https://fluxnet.org/community/fluxnet-seminar-series/ \nContact us at: fluxnet-seminar-series@fluxdata.org \nFriday\, April 22nd\, 9am PDT | 12pm EST | 5pm London | 1am (Sat\, Apr 23rd) Tokyo

SUMMARY:FLUXNET-ECN Seminar Series: Alana Ayasse from Carbon Mapper
DESCRIPTION:Dear Flux communities\, \nWe are writing to invite you to participate in the forthcoming FLUXNET Seminar Series\, a community event co-sponsored by FLUXNET Early Career Network\, AmeriFlux Management Project (AMP)\, and members of the AmeriFlux and FLUXNET communities. \nIn this webinar we will hear from Alana Ayasse from Carbon Mapper on careers in non-profit organizations\, and what early careers need to know if considering joining this field. \nAlana Ayasse is a Research Scientist for Carbon Mapper. Alana’s current research interests include understanding the role of satellites in a global carbon monitoring system and using airborne remote sensing data to further understand trends in methane and CO2 emissions. She has worked extensively with Imaging spectrometers (hyperspectral) and specializes in applying imaging spectrometers to map greenhouse gases. She received her M.A. in Geography from UCLA and Ph.D. in Geography from the University of California\, Santa Barbara. \nCarbon Mapper\, Inc.\, is a non-profit (501c3) entity with a mission to deliver and guide the adoption of digital public goods that facilitate timely action to mitigate human impacts to Earth’s climate and ecosystems. Carbon Mapper recognizes there is an urgent need for a wide range of actions to accelerate methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) mitigation. Barriers to action include high costs for methane leak detection\, gaps in self-reported CO2 data\, incomplete observations of priority regions at scales relevant for decision making\, and lack of data accessibility and transparency. Through advanced satellite systems\, Carbon Mapper hopes to provide data to erase these barriers. Currently\, our airborne pilot projects are demonstrating the potential for an operational satellite data service that can help accelerate greenhouse gas mitigation. In this talk I will introduce Carbon Mapper and share results from ongoing airborne pilot projects. \nRegister here!

SUMMARY:Year of Water webinar – Sap Flow: Applications\, Challenges\, and Opportunities
DESCRIPTION:Sap flow measurements have been used by ecophysiologists and ecohydrologists for the past several decades to characterize plant water transport. In addition to improving our understanding of plant-level water dynamics\, sap flow data can enhance our understanding of key hydrologic processes within an eddy covariance footprint and within a modeling framework. However\, much like eddy covariance data\, researchers need to carefully account for challenges associated with instrumentation\, data processing\, and data interpretation. This webinar highlights four perspectives on important insights that can be gained from sap flow data. \nFind information about the speakers on our webinar page! \nRegister HERE.
