SUMMARY:AmeriFlux Decadal Synthesis Workshop—Berkeley
DESCRIPTION:Registration is now closed. If you have questions\, contact Trevor Keenan\, Chair for this meeting. \nThis workshop will focus on decadal synthesis\, combined with the integration of flux measurements with other data sources (remote sensing\, inventories\, tree rings\, phenology\, etc.). We will also explore priorities for future eddy-covariance research\, and outline a general synthesis of advances over the past decade. \nWe envisage that this workshop will provide opportunities for new synthesis groups to form and grow. Time for these discussions will be set aside. Organizers for this workshop: Chair Trevor Keenan\, and Co-Chairs Dave Moore and Ankur Desai. \nNote: For this workshop\, AmeriFlux Management Project is covering costs for space\, refreshments and logistical support. AMP will also be able to offer limited support for travel awards for those in need. It will be held at Berkeley Lab. Most attendees should expect to cover their own expenses for travel and lodging.

SUMMARY:GHG Flux Workshop Potsdam: From Photosystems to Ecosystems
DESCRIPTION:Greenhouse gas (GHG) flux measurements are key to understanding the drivers of global climate change\, the short- and long-term consequences of ecosystem management\, and related changes on multiple scales. Such information contributes to the identification and prediction of physical and physiological processes underlying ongoing and future environmental changes\, and helps influence important decisions on their mitigation\, and related local and global policies. \nAlthough GHG flux measurements are conducted on a variety of scales\, from a single leaf to a large region\, many research projects are typically focused on one scale\, while actual physical and physiological processes are happening over a continuum of scales. This workshop is designed to bridge research efforts and measurement techniques at all scales into more vertically integrated approaches. \nNovel measurement techniques and innovative technologies are leading to new scientific findings\, by allowing researchers to approach their investigations in new ways. This workshop’s speakers are among the leaders in their scientific disciplines\, who will share their latest results with the community. \nThe first day of this workshop will focus on leaf-level measurements\, covering multiple photosynthetic topics from carbon assimilation to fluorescence. The second day begins bridging the leaf- and ecosystem-level measurements\, describing new techniques\, from multi-scale Solar Induced Fluorescence (SIF) research to drone measurements. The third day continues scaling up to ecosystem- and regional-level measurements\, from eddy covariance and surface renewal techniques to satellite and other remote sensing measurements. \nIn addition to the keynote lectures covering the above-mentioned topics\, there will be demonstrations of new instrumentation and measurement techniques. A poster session will continue throughout the workshop\, and all attendees are encouraged to contribute. \nThe social program of the workshop will include a boat trip down the Havel River\, passing by the Glienicke Bridge\, a historic location for spy swaps during the Cold War era\, featured in the 2015 movie “Bridge of Spies”. The evening will also include dinner and an opportunity to network with other scientists in an informal spy-free atmosphere. \nhttp://www.potsdam-flux-workshop.eu

SUMMARY:CARBON CYCLING IN BOREAL PEATLANDS AND CLIMATE CHANGE II WORKSHOP\, FINLAND
DESCRIPTION:The latest knowledge on the role of carbon cycling in relation to predicted climate change\, and to stimulate collaborations and exchanges between Finnish scientists and international experts.Goals of the workshop:\n1. Present the latest results about carbon cycle in boreal peatlands in relation to climate change to evaluate the current state of the art\n2. Compile existing data to address peatland biogeochemistry response to climate change\, e.g.\na. Greenhouse gas dynamics\, DOC leaching\nb. Soil carbon storage\nc. Vegetation and biomass\, litter production and decomposition\nd. Microbes and soil fauna\n3. Identify major gaps in the current knowledge and promote collaborative research addressing them \nField excursions will be organized to Hyytiälä ICOS/SMEAR II station and Siikaneva mire ICOS site and experimental sites in Lakkasuo mire. \nPreliminary program will be announced by December 2016. The final registration deadline will be April 2017.

SUMMARY:ESA 2016 Special Session - 20thAnniversary of the AmeriFlux Network: Past Research Accomplishments and Future Directions to Advance Understanding of Terrestrial Ecosystem Function in the Anthropocene
DESCRIPTION:It has been 20 years since the official formation of the AmeriFlux network\, and we are having a special session at ESA in Fort Lauderdale\, FL to celebrate. \nSession title: 20thAnniversary of the AmeriFlux Network: Past Research Accomplishments and Future Directions to Advance Understanding of Terrestrial Ecosystem Function in the Anthropocene.” \nMonday\, August 8\, 2016: 8:00 PM-10:00 PM\nGrand Floridian Blrm G\, Ft Lauderdale Convention Center \nDescription:\nThis two-hour special session celebrates 20 years of the AmeriFlux research network\, with several invited talks highlighting major research findings and open discussion of big ideas for future directions\, followed by refreshments. Dave Hollinger and I will start the session with the history and research accomplishments of the network over the past 20 years\, then we pass it off to Steve Running as he has been a supporter from the modeling committee since nearly the beginning (guaranteed to entertain). Then Marcy Litvak will present ideas for the future. Refreshments will follow the first hour of talks. \nHere is the web site for information on the ESA meeting: http://esa.org/ftlauderdale/ and the special session: https://eco.confex.com/eco/2016/webprogram/Session11773.html \nHope to see you there! \nBev Law (bev.law@oregonstate.edu)\nDave Hollinger (davidh@hypatia.unh.edu)
